Giving Thanks Through Fandom

The holiday season and fandom have been inextricably linked together for much of our modern history.

It could be Boxing Day football, Christmas basketball, or the joys of college bowl season, all have become time honored traditions that serve as opportunities to build memories and community.

In a season known for camaraderie, nothing might foster that emotion more than sports.

And much like the teams they root for, fans have an opportunity to come together to contribute to a goal larger than themselves.

As we begin the holiday season this week, I wanted to speak with fans of the two teams most associated with Thanksgiving on how they would like to give back to their community.

For generations, the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions have become synonmous with one’s Thanksgiving traditions, with their games serving as the background noise for countless meal preps and eventual feasts.

I asked these fans two questions:

“What’s one issue affecting people in YOUR area that fans could come together to support this Thanksgiving?”

“What’s one way you think fans could turn that tradition into something meaningful for the community?”
