F1: The Cost of Wanting In

I’ve never truly understood Formula One.

What is there to understand about supercars going incredibly fast through some of the most luxurious locations in the world you might ask. Anyone can appreciate the engineering prowress and skill to master the horsepower of these machines.

It’s the elitism that i could never understand.

The prices that you see on the cover for this month’s journal are the lowest and highest price ticket that you could get to attend a Formula One race. Photos from inside the Miami Grand Prix advertised a hundred dollar hot dog. Every post about race day seems to cater to the fans that fit a certain economic strata, fame, or influence. Meanwhile, those that can’t afford access to the celebrity paddock are shuttled off to the grandstands.

In order to answer this question that has been gnawing at me for quite some time now, I brought together a group of experts, fans, and industry insiders to help educate myself and you about what Formula One can do to bring more of the common fan into their world.

Leading this up has been my collaborator for this month’s journal, Alexa Phillips of Culture Slant. Her knowledge of how this sport is reshaping technology, media, and culutre has been indispensable.

We can’t wait for you to learn alongside us as we take our foot off the brake and send you racing through this journal.
